Very new knitter with a quick question

Hi all I have only recently begun to knit (sort of learned when I was a kid but not seriously) anyway I am trying to knit booties and the instructions say K21, K2 tog tbs, turn.

What does tbs mean? and what does it mean by turn?

Hi, I’m a newbie too and I’m not sure about tbs…maybe ‘through back side’?..really don’t know.

But to turn: When you have finished knitting a row all the stitches will be on the right needle. You will need to turn or switch your needles around so that the needle with the stitches on it is in your left hand and the empty needle is in your right hand. Then you can begin the next row.

Thanks, one more question I have to slip 1 then continue knitting how do you slip a stitch? Do I just drop it - I’m quite good at that lol :slight_smile:

Again I’m very new so someone feel free to jump in if I say something wrong. But I believe that to slip a stitch all you do is slide it off your left needle and onto the right needle. In other words don’t knit or purl it, just slip it over to the right needle unworked. Don’t drop it, that will undo all the stitches beneath it.

Tia - I think you need to stop apoligizing for being new to knitting. You have all the answers exactly right!

TBS does mean through the back - with your yarn behind your work, stick your right needle through 2 loops on the left needle, working in the back instead of the front. Then knit those two loops together. There are videos in the glossary which should show you how to do it - this stitch may also be described as “through the back loop”. Knitting the stitches together this way will twist your decrease differently than knitting them together through the front.

tbs means Through back stitch. In the UK we say Throught back loop and slip one means. You are transfering a stitch from left needle to the right needle. but you don’t knit that stitch just transfering it.

:teehee: Good I’m glad I had it right. But since I’ve never actually done tbs, I thought I’d better explain that I might not know what I’m talking about. :mrgreen:

But I’ve done similar in crochet and thought I’d take an educated guess.

Once you get the nack in knitting you want to explore more patterns I do my own stitching patterns.

Hi, Hope this helps… K21 = knit the next 21 stitches or the first 21 stitches if you’re at the beginning of a row. Then knit 2 stitches together by inserting your right needle through the backs of the next 2 stitches and knit those together. Then turn your work to the next row. In other words, if you still have stitches left on your right needle after the K2 tog, you turn your work to start on the next row and leave whatever number of stitches on the right needle.
