Vertical Drop Stitch on circular needles?

Okay, oh wise ones, so I was talking to a woman at a LYS the other day, and she had on these lovely wrist and a neck warmer in the Vertical Drop Stitch. I’ve found the pattern itself here, but it’s worked back and forth rather than on circs.

If I wanted to work this on circs, do I:

  1. leave off the beginning k1 and ending p2 k1, and just cast on multiples of 8? Or would I substitute something else in between the pattern repeats, like just a k1 and cast on multiples of 8 +1?

and

  1. would I do all the odd number rows flipping knit stitches to purl stitches and purl stitches to knit stitches?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Are you wanting to join it in the round or just knit it back and forth on the circs but leave it flat?

Join in the round! I know it must be possible, because she said that’s how she did it, but it’s doing my head in…I’m going to do some swatches on the train on the way back into London today, but any advice gratefully received!

Ooh, thanks Dustinac, someone on Rav, beautiful girl, did it for me in text, bless her paws and whiskers:

The drop stitch pattern

  1. Yes, cast on multiples of 8 and leave off all the edge stitches.
  2. Yes, on odd numbered rounds, exchange knits for purls and vice versa, but you may also need to work that line reading from right to left.

In other words, the pattern in the round would be:

Cast on a Multiple of 8 stitches
Round 0 (Right side): * p2, k1, yo, k1, p2, k2; repeat from *.
Rounds 1, 3 and 5: *p2, k3, p2, k2; repeat from *. (Notice you are purling the purls and knitting both the knits and yarn overs. This Round is similar to ribbing.)
Rounds 2 and 4: *p2, k3, p2, k2; repeat from *. (You are knitting the knits and purling the purls, just as in ribbing.)
Round 6: *p2, k1, drop the next stitch and unravel down to the yarn over, k1, p2, k1, yo, k1; repeat from *.
Rounds 7, 9, 11: *p2, k2, p2, k3; repeat from *.
Rounds 8 and 10: * p2, k2, p2, k3; repeat from *.
Round 12: *p2, k1, yo, k1, p2, k1, drop the next stitch and unravel down to the yarn over, k1; repeat from *.
Repeat Rounds 1-12.
