Hi friends. I am a new-ish knitter and I am in love with this pattern. It looks like someone made several rows of vertical garter stitch (long, like a scarf-length) and then turned it and did horizontal garter stitch. Have you ever seen this pattern? If not, is this pretty easy to do? Thanks for helping me! -Jen
Vertical and horizontal knitting
Lovely looking pattern. What is the name please?
Yes, this is a nice method of adding a border or just adding interest to a project. You knit one of the pieces and perhaps bind off then pick up sts along a side edge.
Here’s a video for picking up sts which works quite well. The sts don’t have to be picked up precisely but the general recommendation of 2sts per 3 rows in garter works well.
I’ve been looking at applied borders recently, getting ideas for a project. There are lots of tutorials for this without live stitches ( adding to a cast on or bind off edge) or with live stitches (don’t bind off but add a boarder which goes at right angles as your example photo).
I’ve been looking at a variety of patterned boarders but it can easily be worked as garter stitch too. In your scarf either side could be the boarder, it’s just a matter of which you prefer to knit up first and which second.
It’s very effective and shows how lovely a simple garter stitch is.
