Version 1: cast on 35 st; version 2: cast on 201 st?

Hi, I’m planning on knitting a scarf for my husband and found a pattern he liked at http://www.scknitting.com/spring2005/manly-scarf.html

There are instructions for two versions. Version one casts on 35 stitches, version two - with example shown in picture on web page above, calls for casting on 201 stitches. Subsequent directions for an optional keyhole make it clear that the 201 is NOT a misprint.

I’m pretty new to knitting and these instructions confuse me. If my math is right, given the gauge, version one would be about 5" wide and version 2 would be about 28" wide - neither of which would look like the photo, I think.

The gauge is 28sts to 10cm over slip stitch pattern on 4.5mm needles using 8ply wool.

I’d appreciate help in understanding this. Thanks,
Sandy Lynn

If you look at the picture, the stitches are going in opposite ways. One is knit with the short end on the needles and the other is knit horizontally with the long side on the needles.

Thanks, Ingrid, I hadn’t even noticed that until you pointed it out. So there are two separate scarves pictured? (which was not indicated in the text).

Even so - are my calculations way off as far as the width of the finished products? If so, how do I figure these things in the future?

Also, in version 1 do you think I still change the yarn color every two rows to get that effect?

Many thanks.
Sandy Lynn

I think your measurements are right–about 5 inches across for the one on 35 st and as long as you knit it; and if the calculations are right, then the one knit on the long side would only be about 28" long and as wide as you choose to make it.

As for the color changes, I did a slip st pattern where I had to change every two rows and it looked similar. I’d go with the pattern on this part.
