Im asking for help in trying to read a vera cardigan pattern by snowden becker,TWINING VINE LEAF PATTERN … It says on the next WS row work in rib pattern as set to first marker work row 1 of twining vine leaf chart to next marker continue in rib pattern as set to fifth marker work row 13 to last marker, finish in rib pattern as set. that part i have figured out. here is where im stuck Next row RS work as above following first row 14 then row 2 of chart for each side. it says it mirrors the vine pattern on the fronts you will continue to work the leaf and vine pattern in this fashion following the appropriate chart row for each side.
it seems as though im jumping around and I’m not sure why im not sure why it says row 14 then row 2…(on either end?) . im so confused. if this is confusing so sorry not my intent

Worked over a panel of 26 sts (charted version shows 38, but the accurate st count is given below for each row where it changes)

The pattern is worked on both the RS and the WS. Think of the pattern on only one of the fronts, the leftt front, You start with row 1 and for the left front, on the next row proceed to row 2. The next row for that side is row 3 and so on.

For the right front the first row worked is row 13 of the chart. The next time you get to the right front, work row 14 of the chart, and on the following row for the right front work row 15

It seems like the pattern is jumping around because you’re working both fronts at the same time but actually each front is proceeding in sequence up the chart. The fronts just start at different rows of the chart in order to stagger the design.

You’re welcome! I’m hoping I can do it, haven’t knit in a few years, this is out of my comfort zone, and will be my first sweater to knit

Is it ok to ask you another question concerning the pattern you helped me with before?

i’m at the shape waist and work body part of the pattern I understand most of it except for a little part of the decrease,

it states waist shaping is worked on chart 12 and 24 [where i am at in the pattern] it says this is easy to remember : every time i work a sk2p for the tip of a leaf in the vine pattern, thats a shaping row] waist decreases are worked on right side rows as follows
*work in pattern as set to ast k2 rib before side marker: K2 tog, work in pattern to next K2 rib after side marker;ssk repeat from *once; work in patter as set to end
then it tells me to woork decrease row 4 times (16 sts decreased) decreasing one rib further out from side markers each time then continue without shaping for 65 rows. My question is do i start the rib decreasing when I do the sk2p? and is it decreasing 4 times in a row on the right side only or only when i do the tips of the leafs? I hope this makes since and you’re able to help . thank you in advance if you’re able. Cathy

Decrease when you get to each tip of the leaf sk2p until you’ve completed the given number of decreases. That will nicely space the waist shaping so that you get a gradual decrease.
