V neck baby sweater decreases

What is the best way to do decreases in a v neck? Right at the end of the neck edge row or 1 or 2 stitches into the row?

I did K2tog at the end of the rows and it looks really messy. However when making the neck trim will it even up after picking up stitches?
Help!

I usually do them 1 or 2 in but it may depend on the finish the neck gets and if it is cardigan or a pullover.
