Using a different yarn weight?

Hi!

I’m sure this question has been asked before but I am just snatching a quick moment while my little one is occupied! Apologies for not doing a search :shifty:

I want to start knitting a pair of longies for my son. The pattern calls for 8 ply woollen yarn (I think this is known as Light Worsted in US), using US size 3 - 5 needles. I couldn’t find any 8 ply that I liked but found some really lovely 10 ply (worsted in US?). The gauge is 24 stitches per 4 inches and 32 rows per 4 inches. I’m a beginner knitter (this is my 2nd project) and I’m just finding this all a bit confusing.

What would I have to adjust in the pattern to use a heavier yarn? Should I use a smaller or larger needle? Reduce the number of stitches per row?

I hope I’ve made my questions clear enough! I’m not 100% sure of what I’m talking about

Thanks for any help!

Alesha.

Knit up a swatch and see if you can get the gauge called for in the pattern and then you should be able to use the pattern as written. You can try with a smaller needle and see if you like the fabric it produces. It might be too stiff because it will be tightly knit, and if you don’t like it you probably can make a smaller size of the longies with the larger needles and yarn and get the same size.
