We got home last night around 5 pm. DSās fever broke on Saturday. As I was telling Kelly earlier, I was expecting this big dramatic, sweaty fever-breaking event, but it just gradually kept spiking lower and lower until eventually, it was GONE! (Thank GOD!!) The drās never did decide what was causing it, but thatās not an unusual thing with these kids on chemo. The weird thing is that he never really got āneutropenicā (same thing as anemic except it has to do w/ white blood cells instead of red). So, really, I think we were seeing a virus here, and because of his compromised blood counts, his body wasnāt very efficient at recovering from it.
I canāt tell you how it warms my heart to see all of these messsages out here!! You guys are the greatest. DS (and DD) know all about you guys, and they enjoy looking at your FOās and hearing about your families, etc. (Of course, I have to censor some stuff ) Thank you so much for all of the prayers and cyber hugs!
Now one of my goals is to pack some meat onto DSās little body. Heās always been on the rather thin side, but two years (combined total) worth of chemo have not helped him beef up any. His appetite is slightly better now that heās out of the hospital. If any of you have any ideas on foods or recipes that would be tasty to an 11-year-old boy, please let me know!!! Typically, heās not a terribly picky eater, but chemo does throw off his taste buds. He likes Mexican food, pasta, pizza, salad (which he can only have when counts are good), fruit, candy (of course), and junk food. Weāve tried every variety of nutritional drink (Boost, Ensure, Mighty Shakes) and he doesnāt like any of them. They either taste like vitamins or theyāre too rich.
Well, I need to get rolling. We have to take our car in to get itās brakes fixed today; they sound awful. It is really nice to go and do something as mundane as this ⦠REALLY! I think I have a new tagline to add: āMost people really underrate normal.ā ā Me

Iām so glad to hear he is home! :cheering: :cheering:
Ice cream is nice and caloric
Thanks, Jodi!!!
Glad to hear that DS is homeā¦Iāll rack my brain for some recipes that might appeal to him⦠
Thanks, Kempy! Ice cream is always my fall-back, too. I brought some āMighty Shakesā home from the hospital, and Iām going to ādiluteā them with vanilla ice cream, etc to make them seem less rich. They are really pretty good, but I can see where he would feel like theyāre going to make him sick. They pack a lot of stuff into about 6 oz of drink.
I still have an afghan square for you ā never did get any others done. I missed your deadline, and thatās really not a big deal to me, but I have nothing else to do w/ the square. So, Iāll hopefully be bringing it to you on the 29th!! Yeah!! I canāt believe youāre coming all the way up here!
PRAISE GOD yaāll are home and he is better! And that you are better, as well (being a momā¦we worry a LOT!)! You all will continue to remain in our thoughts & prayers.
Iām sorry that I have no yummy recipes. I did think āsmoothieā when u mentioned ensure, etc. Perhaps yaāll can make some smoothies at home that he might like?!

:cheering: :cheering: So glad things are back to ānormalā.
A tip on Ensure that you might want to tryāmix it with flavored syrup and seltzer! Strawberry, chocolate, etc. Makes it less thick and more soda-fountain-ish.

So glad things are looking up!
On the recipe thingā¦I am a post gastric bypass gal (5 yrs) and my appetite in the beginning was so low that the smell of food really turned my stomach. But, my dietician at the time suggested if I couldnāt get the ensure or boost down, to freeze it into an ice tray then run the cubes through the blender with a splash of skim milk and it made it nice and milk shake-like. I bet in his case a squirt of light chocolate syrup would help the taste a little. donāt wanna over suger him, but itās a thought. I also ate hamburger gravy (not all the time of course). basically just browned groung beef and make your standard brown gravy from the brown bits after draining the fat. a little of that and some nice wam mashed potaties really felt good when i was sick as a kid and it was easy for me to eat when my āscheduleā allowed for certain foods after surgery.
Just a tip⦠
Ingrid and Bink ā
Thank you so much for the nutrition drink tips. I just read yours now, Bink, but I had read Ingridās earlier & mentioned it to DS. He thought that the seltzer sounded like a great idea! These āMighty Shakesā that we got @ the hospital are really quite good. They donāt have that vitaminy taste like Boost and Ensure. The problem is that they are really, really rich, and it just makes him nauseous. So, I think cutting them w/ some seltzer or skim milk is a great idea!! Iāll give it a try tomorrow. He is so thin, itās just scary.
Well, off to bed. Still tryinā to get caught up on my
!
Nighty night!
