Unknitting - how to do it?

I am a new knitter. I knit a row in garter stitch & before I finished it realized it was a row I should have ‘SSK’ and ‘k2T’. So, I would like to take off the garter stitches I made in this row.

I was told to ‘unknit’ the stitches of the row, but I do not know how.

I searched how to do this & have not found the directions.

Can you point me in the right direction?

I appreciate your help. I am delighted to have found this resource.

You can frog it, which involves taking the needles out, and just ripping out the stitches row by row, then putting the loops back onto the needles. i wouldn’t recommend this to a beginner unless you’re using a yarn that is grabby enough to hold the loops in place so you don’t lose stitches you don’t want to lose.

You can tink it, which is “knit” backwards and exactly how you do it: you put the left needle tip into the stitch below the made stitch on the right needle, slip it onto the left needle and pull the tail out of the stitch so it’s un-made or un-knit. It’s slow, but gives you control over the un-knitting process.

Welcome to Knitting Help!

Here’s some help for tinking.

It’s called “tink” because it’s the word “knit” backwards. ‘Knitting backwards’ is technically not correct because there is a method of knitting across a row without turning that is actually knitting backwards because it adds a row. It’s often used for things like entrelac. If you’re interested here’s a link for knitting backwards.

Yes, you want to unknit which is used for just a row or two; removing the needle to rip back is when you need to undo several inches worth. There’s a video on how to do it on the Tips page under Fixing mistakes.
