I’m knitting a child’s jumper, but one side seems much longer than the other. That sounds daft, but it’s almost as though the left edge is much more stretchy than the right. If I fold the piece in half one edge seems longer but it can’t be. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Uneven Sides
Hello
Could you perhaps post a photo of the piece, someone might be able to spot something if they see the fabric.
One possibility is if you have been interrupted mid row and when you came back you accidentally turned the work without finishing the row, then at the end of the row turned again and went right across. This would make one edge 2 rows longer than the other and could explain what you have described.
It’s only a thought though, this may not have happened.
Thank you its definitely not that. Have taken a couple of pictures but not sure whether they are good enough.
My poor husband is modelling the dodgy knitting
It looks very nice and neatly knitted.
Are you sure the edges are uneven length? Could it be that it just needs a bit of flattening down and smoothing out and will even out when you wash/block it?
If you are sure there are an equal number of rows, plus your knitting is neat without obvious errors, then I would imagine it would turn out OK.
Perhaps others will be able to help.
You have a helpful husband there!
So good to have a willing model!
What is the name of your pattern?
The pattern stitch looks like beautifully knit brioche which is lovely and stretchy. The stretchy part may well be the problem. It’s good that this is likely knit flat because the side seams will help with the stretchiness by adding stability . Blocking will help even this out and the seams will help maintain the shape.
Thank you both so much. Its a James Brett pattern uk no. JB616. They call it a textured rib. I love it. Knit right side, then k1, p1, k1below. It makes such a lovely stretchy jumper as you say Salmonmac. I’ll carry on then and rely on blocking at the end. Xxxxx
Beautiful knitting! To me it looks like it could be looser stitches at the edge.
Ah, so really Fisherman’s rib rather than brioche but just as yummy. It’s going to be a lovely sweater.
I love it, such a neat looking stitch. I have no idea what brioche is but may need to find out. I’m tasked with knitting a ‘geen’ one for Jack nearly six and a ‘boo’ one for Theo 3. Thank you so much for your advice.
Oh, lucky you to have such enthusiastic requests. Enjoy making them all.
(Brioche is knit differently with very similar results. It’s a unnecessarily intimidating because of the abbreviations used but it’s a really enjoyable knit.)
Oooerr see what you mean.
Thank you, will check out the video.
