I’m trying to knit the heart version of the Premmie Hat by Carissa Browning from Ravelry. I’m stuck on rounds 4 thru 12, the heart motif. I get as far as about round 7 or 8 and I see that the heart
is not forming right. I’m not understanding the use of parenthesis and brackets. For instance, does round 8 mean “k2, p1,k1 five times or k2, p1,k1,p1,k1,p1,k1p1,k1, p1,k1? I’ve started over several times and I’m just not getting it. Please help. Thanks!
Rnds 8, 10: {k2, [p1, k1] five times} to end
I read it as: K2, (p1,k1) 5x, start again with k2.
The parts in square brackets [ ] get repeated as many times as it says within the curly brackets { }. Everything inside the { } gets repeated until the end, once for each heart.
If the hearts aren’t lining up, you may be missing something in an earlier row. For example:
Rnd 5: {k5, [p1, k1] twice, k3} to end.
It might be easy to miss the k3 after doing the repeated [p1,k1].
Normally if the brackets are closed « k2, P1,K1 » five times, it means K2,P1,K1 - K2,P1,K1 -……5 times
{k2, [p1, k1] five times} to end
But the “5 times” refers to what’s in the square brackets inside the curly ones, so you only repeat the part in the square brackets 5 times, THEN repeat the whole thing.
