Understanding Crochet Pattern

Hey guys–
It’s been awhile since I last logged in, let alone posted here!
I signed up for Lion Brand yarn newsletters, and received one with child-easy patterns and stuff (because, you know, at age 19 I’m still a child :slight_smile: ) and saw a beanie I’d love to crochet. I haven’t done much crocheting, and thought it would be a good beginners project. I wound up starting and restarting 5-6 times as I started understanding what each step really wanted, but now I’m stuck, and can’t seem to figure it out on my own.

Laugh if you want, but yes, I’m asking for help on a child-easy pattern :slight_smile:

Instructions from the link that I’m having difficulties with are:
[B]Rnd 3:[/B] 1 single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat to marker - 18 stitches

I thought I understood- 1 single crochet and then in the next “loop” 2 single crochets.

Then for the next step:

[B]Rnd 4:[/B] 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; repeat to marker - 24 stitches.

So… do I do 1 single crochet after 2 “loops,” and then 2 single crochet in the “loop” after the 1 single crochet?

Because that’s what I did. But THEN:

[B]Rnd 5[/B]: 1 single crochet in each of next 3 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet; to marker - 30 stitches.

Which totally baffled me, and made me think I was doing something wrong. 1 single crochet every 3 “loops?” Made no sense…

Can someone please explain?

I hope that by next loop you mean the top of the next single crochet of the previous round. Note that each crochet stitch has two loops on the top (front and back) so when you say “loop” it can be confusing. :wink:

[B]Rnd 4[/B]: If you’re a knitter you may understand this better as: *single crochet, single crochet, 2 single crochet increase * repeat around the round (total 24 stitches).

You will put a single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches then in the third you make two single crochets in the same stitch.

The key words you seem to have missed in both rnd 4 and rnd 5 was the “[B]in each[/B]” single crochet.

For round 5 you will single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches and on the fourth stitch you do 2 single crochet in the same stitch (Total 30 stitches).

Is that any clearer?

Aaaaaah, yes, that is more clear! And yes, by loop I did mean either the front or back of the next chain.
