I am a fairly new knitter and I need some help on a pattern. I am going to make a sweater that has a stripe sequence for 54 rows. After the ribbing the instructions say…
Beg with first row of stripe sequence cont in st st throughout dec 1 st at each end of 5th and foll 6th row.
Work 15 rows straight.
Inc 1 st at each end of next and 2 foll 10th rows.
Work 15 rows straight.
How do I interpret this correctly? I haven’t started yet, but in figuring it out on paper it looks like with the sleeve and armhole shaping later, I will have more than the 54 rows of striping sequence.
The first decs will be on the 5th row, then the 6th row after that - rows 5 and 11. Then do 15 more rows and inc on the next one, the 16th (since your last dec) and 26th, 36th. Then another 15 rows. Check your row gauge to see how close it is to the pattern gauge. If your’s is off a lot, then convert the pattern’s gauge to inches and work that many inches instead of 15 or 10 rows.
Thanks. That is what I figured. The number of rows just did not make sense for the total number of striping rows. It might make sense as I get into it.
