Understanding a knitting pattern

Hi, I have just started knitting again after being a novice many years ago. I have possibly taken on too much, but here we go. I am knitting a baby cardigan for my new granddaughter, due April (so plenty of time). Here is my problem. I have completed the cast on of 46 STS and have worked 5 row in2x2 rib. As per pattern
Next Row is Rib 2 (5:7:5:6), rib2tog (rib 6 (4:4:8:6) 5 (7:7:5:7) times, rib 2 (5:7:5:6). 40 (46:50:56:62) sts

Can someone simplify this for me. I have wrote it out for myself as so
K1 p1 rib2tog x 5
K1 p1 k1p1 k1p1 rib2tog x5
K1p1
But this can’t be right in some many levels but I can’t read it any other way. Please help thank you

Could you give us a name or link for the pattern? Sometimes it helps to see what you’re trying to achieve. And are you doing the smallest size?

First, if you’ve been working in 2x2 rib, you should probably still be working in 2x2 rib, so there wouldn’t be any k1, p1 going on.

Based on what you have written there, I would write it out as so: Rib 2, [rib2tog, rib 6] x 5, rib 2
k2
p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2
k2tog, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2
p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2
k2tog, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2
p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2
k2

However, that only gives me 39 stitches, not 40. Is there a selvage stitch that might not be included?

Hi, thank you for your quick reply. I have taken a few photos of the
pattern and the part that I am working on. Hopefully that will work.
Thanks lin

Welcome to KH!
Lin26, cute little sweater. I think it’ll make it easier for lewister to explain if she knows which size you’re making, please.

Hi,
Thank you for your help today. I worked it out (finally). It was simply
k1p1 k2tog, k1p1 x 6 k2tog x6, k1p1 = 40 I was getting confused by the
number of sts for the bigger sizes.
Feeling relieved, this should be relaxing
Thanks again
Lin

Glad to hear it. It looks like when you wrote out the instructions in your initial post, you left out the second rib2tog, which was throwing me off.

However, you’re working in 2x2 rib, so when it says to rib, you should be doing k2, p2, not k1, p1. The row should be:
k2, p2tog
k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2tog
p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2tog
k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2tog
p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2tog
k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2tog
p2

Best of luck with the sweater!!

Thanks very much, will send a picture when I finish it
