I’ve just spent the past 4 weeks working on the Circular Cardigan from Debbie Bliss’ “Out of Town” pattern book. Basically each round eventually came to 540 stitches. I get to the last sleeve with the last 4"s to go + border and guess what? I run out of yarn. Go to my local shop and of course they don’t have the color. Plus, they said the chances of me getting the same die lot are next to nill.:doh:

But I guess it’s my fault for having abadoned the project in March 2008. It kept screaming at me every time I walked past it, so I finally picked it up and starting knitting furiously to finish it.
What a bummer! Has this ever happened to you? If so, what did you do about it?
Yep. I currently have an unfinished sweater because the yarn ran out. I’m hoping to eventually get some more so I can finish it. As it was color work I need to find several colors in order to finish it up.
Are you a member of www.ravelry.com? If not, join up - it’s free. You can search for your yarn/color in other peoples stashes. Even if they haven’t listed their yarn is available for sale/trade it’s worth it to contact anybody with the right color and find out if the dye lot matches. Even if not, maybe you’d still want to buy/trade for it.
It happened to me with one of my first sweaters…(before I knew much about yardage and such…)
I started a sweater with one of those 1lb bags you can get at walmart, and didn’t have enough for the last sleeve. So I found something that was close, and finished it. It looked like crap…but I finished the sweater…and at least felt the contentment of finishing a garment for the first time…
In retrospect…I might have frogged it and done something else with the yarn…shrugs
Try writing to the company directly: info@darkhorseyarn.com. They might be able to help you or give you the name of retailers you could order it by mail. By the way, I always purchase an extra skein or 2 beyond what the pattern tells you. I’d rather spend that extra money and then make socks or a scarf or mittens out of it then run out. That’s the worst!
If none of the other good ideas work, is there a way to “frog” the completed sleeves back to the elbow (or somewhere?) and choose a contrasting color? Stripe? Something like that?
Sorry – I pushed the sumit button too soon. Maybe start at the elbow or slightly below (wherever) and work intarsia to the end of the sleeve? (Now I think I’m really done.)
There are two people on Ravelry with that exact dyelot in their stashes (no photos). They aren’t up for trade, but maybe if you contacted them you could work something out.

I tell ya the most irritating thing about this is I did this sweater as a part of a class to learn casting on and working in the round. They advised I buy an extra skein in case the instructor got it wrong, so I did. When I went back to them for help, they were kinda useless.
As for frogging: Ugh … The design of the sweater is so unusual because it’s knit in one big round and the sleeves sort of look like they are natural to the round. I thought about frogging them entirely out and doing some lacy pattern or something …
i’m actually working on the Shetland Shorty Shrug from knitty right now, i’m almost finished but i don’t have enough to do the arm lineing. i went on elann.com to order another skein and thankfully they were still selling the same dye lot. now i found out the post office in my town lost it. i have to call my town post master tomorrow and hope for the best
If the ravelry idea doesn’t work out, try littleknits.com. I found some discontinued yarn in the same dyelot for a project I was working on. I had purchased the original yarn about 2 years before!

I’m glad you found the yarn! I have had really close calls and I’m actually working on a sweater right now that I’m a bit worried about. I bought more than I needed for the pattern, but it looks like it still might run out. Its a discontinued yarn so I am crossing my fingers for now.
