Boy I thought this would be a breeze because I made sandal socks that required making a seperate big toe holder thingy. It should be easy but I’m stuck anyhow. I could just do what I want and I think make it turn out but if I’m going to follow the pattern here’s where I get stuck:
page 102 if you have Weekend Knitting by Melanie Falick
I’ve done the cuff and the bottom of the hand and now I’m to do the thumb, or rather, put the thumb stitches on waste yarn and knit the other part of the palm. But it DOESN’T MAKE SENSE! :wall:
You have 13 stitches on each of 4 needles. It says: The beginningof the rnd is at the pinky finger edge of the hand. Next rnd: K16, k8 thumb stitches with an 8" piece of waste yarn, return last 8 sts to left hand needle, with main yarn k8 sts worked with waste yarn, k28 to end.
Thumb sts will be picked up from the waste yarn and worked later.
but… that k8 thumb sts with the waste yarn are you also knitting the sts from the needle? I mean, you’d have to no? So why the
"return last 8sts to left hand needle and with main yarn k8sts worked with waste yarn"
The math is, if you knit 16, then 8, you don’t have 8 stitches left on a needle. ? You have 2. Unless you are supposed to only use waste yarn and how the heck would you do that.
I'm just lost there. I think it'd be easier just to do it my way but maybe not.
Am I missing a very easy concept here?
I think so, I keep studying the needles but I don’t get it.
of course. I knew it was simple but… does your brain ever get stuck in STUCK ? I kept thinking there was supposed to be 8 stitches left on the needle…
So, I use a piece of waste yarn and create 8 new stitches with that, then knit them again. Wow. Someday I will be a great knitter, just not yet. :whoosh:
First I knit 8 stitches using JUST waste yarn, put them on left needle & knit them… but when I went round & came to them they fell apart, well I took them off the needle and they fell apart. oh god I sound so dumb here
That wasn’t right because I didn’t have 28 stitches left to knit like pattern says.
Now, I ripped it and put it back and tried knitting 8 thumb stitches together along with the waste yarn. Then I put the 8 back on. That would give me 28 stitches left to knit (after knitting the 8).
But when I go to knit the 8 stitches off the left needle, the main yarn is 8 stitches into that needle, in other words it’s dangling from middle of needle. So, I just carried the main yarn over to the beginning of the needle so I could knit the 8 stitches which leaves a small bit of yarn hanging in back. But the math is right. So, is that how I 'm supposed to do it?
I don’t think they are specific enough but I know later on I won’t believe how thick I am. Wish I could show this in person!
Hope this visual helps some - apologies for any blurriness due to my rushing to get this done!
Knit to where the waste yarn is to be placed:
Start knitting with the waste yarn:
Slip the stitches from the left to the right needle:
Now use the regular yarn to knit those waste yarn stitches:
You will have a tail from the waste yarn but you shouldn’t lose the stitches you have already knit at that point. If you prefer it you can tie both ends of the waste yarn together to prevent the stitches slipping off until you are ready to tackle them later.
oh my god Boogs I can’t believe you did that!!! To take the time to shoot pictures, I’m bowled over. (not a Brit term)
You are incredible. Really. I’m going downstairs to get my knitting and I’ll sit here and do this while looking at the pix.
I didn’t do either of those.
Boogs I can’t believe I didn’t just do that, it was simply stated and I kept trying to do something the hard way. Of course! that’s how you do it, just knit with the waste yarn. You wouldn’t believe the convoluted things I did.
Don’t bother answering if you’re busy (it is Sat night I realise)
but I’m keeping those 8 stitches alone on one needle. (as I ignore them) That’s correct right?
Wish I could do something for you. ! Thanks again.
Not busy with anything much but knitting, as per usual.
…but I’m keeping those 8 stitches alone on one needle. (as I ignore them) That’s correct right?
No, you will continue on with the pattern as written, you will come back to the waste yarn later to pick up the stitches and knit the thumb.
Keep on knitting in the round as you were doing previous to this point.
Wish I could do something for you.
Just keep on learning - you’ll have all this stuff down in no time, I’m sure and then it’ll be your turn to help out and give pointers.
