Ugh! Cannot get gauge and a needle size?

After knitting up 2 gauge swatches so far I still cannot seem to get gauge. If you are on Ravelry you can see the pattern/finished project here. It’s the Charm Wrap free from Knitting Daily. I really like it. Anyway, it calls for size 10, 8 and 7 needles. And the gauge is 17.5 sts and 26 rows = 4" in st st on the smallest needles.

So far I have tried the 7s, then I tried the 8s. I will try the gauge on 9s next. But my concern is the 3 needle sizes. If I can get gauge with the 9s, how do I know which needles to use for the others? On Ravelry one lady said she used 11, 10 and 9. If I can get gauge with the 9s (smallest needle) does that sound like a good progression on the needle sizes?

TIA as I have never had this dilemma before :wall:

What are you getting from your swatch?

If you get gauge on the 9s, then use 10 and 10.5 for the rest of the sizes; 11s are too big a jump. But yes, what gauge are you getting? Don’t worry so much about getting both st and row gauge, go for stitch gauge.

With the 7s I honestly can’t remember what I was getting … it was significantly off the 17.5 stitches, though. I know with the 8s I got 19 stitches and 28 rows.

Does that help?

Then try the 9s and see if you get closer. Sounds like that may do it. Are you using a similar weight yarn? If the yarn’s too thin, you might not be able to match.

I am using a similar weight yarn, so I don’t really think that’s the issue, but thanks for pointing that out. I’m off to try the 9s
