I think I’m ready to venture into learning cable stitch. I watched the video and it doesn’t look all that difficult.
Question one: What is the most common cable needle to buy? Are the curved ones easier to work with or are the straight wooden ones? I see that KP has some pretty harmony wood ones.
What would be a good beginners project? I thought about trying a cabled sock cuff? Is that too difficult? I use Silver’s sock pattern.
If the sock is out of my league, and be honest, then what is the next best thing O’ wise ones?
Have you ever made socks? If not, I would definitely try a scarf, you will do enough cables on a scarf that you will be a pro by the end.
An easy sock with cables is Sweet Socks. I am knitting them now and they’re very pretty and simple.
Sorry about that link not working! Thanks to knit4pie for finding the right one.
If you have done socks before, the Sweet Socks might be a fun thing to try. I’m surprised you’ve made socks and never a scarf though!? I thought that was like a mandatory project when you first learn to knit.
I would try the cabling on a sock, since you like socks and can already do them.
Cabling is easy- all you are doing is knitting the stitches out of order. Don’t wait for the cable needle- you can use a bobby pin, another needle, a yarn needle, a stick, a pencil, etc etc. Sometimes I slip the stitches back up to the left needle to work them depending on what I have grabbed to use.
Those harmony ones really are pretty- I don’t have the cable needles but I have the interchangeable set and love them!

After knitting for 30 years I finally this spring knit my 1st scarf. My 1st project was a sweater. I didn’t have any scarf patterns. Back before the internet it wasn’t quite as easy to find patterns, so I learned on sweaters, socks ,gloves etc.
That sweet sock pattern looks like a good starter for cables. They’re spaced fat enough apart that tension shouldn’t be a problem and there’s only 2 cables so you are not constantly cabling.
I know. I’m weird. My sister in law taught me how to do felted bags while visiting at Xmas time. I then watched her sit and knit a sock and was fascinated. So that was my second project.
