I am working on a basic sock with no real pattern. I used to have a generic sock template that had the “recipe” to make a sock. I don’t know if that makes sense…
Anyways, I know there is a trick to turning the heel of a sock from memory. Something about knitting 1 st before the gap, w&t? I haven’t started turning the heel yet but the heel flap is done. There are 16 sts. If anyone has a trick to remembering/figuring out how to do this I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!
Try heels by number. It’s my go-to guide for heels when I’m knitting socks on the fly (or if I don’t like the heel a particular sock pattern calls for.
As for the gap, on the RS, you knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk, k1, turn. Slip 1, purl to one stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1, turn; repeat until all sts are worked.
Does that make sense?
Alright that makes sense. My next question is how do you figure out how many stitches to knit for the first row of your turn?
I think this is the link Emmilen was trying to link to. See if this doesn’t help.
I haven’t made a whole bunch of socks, but some (just finished a pair yesterday). I have not seen a pattern where you had to do a wrap with the turns on the heel. I wouldn’t say it never happens, but it is not always needed. You just turn and then on the next row you work the two stitches together that are on either side of the turning gap. Maybe that prevents holes without the wraps.
