Turning in knitting without creating a gap

Hi my name is Raeven and I am new to the knitting forum. I’m wondering if I could get some help on a project I’m working on…so I’m knitting my first sweater and I’m using a vintage 1940s pattern. Everything has been great so far but now I am stuck  so the directions state: “ in the next row (k1, p1) seventeen times, knit 1, purl 2 tog, k1, turn.” I figured out what it meant to “turn”. I’ll post a photo of the rest of the instructions. So I watched YouTube videos on how to do that without creating gaps in the work and no matter what I try, I’m still getting these gaps in the sweater. What could I be doing wrong?image image

Welcome to the forum!
It’s pretty exciting knitting your first sweater, and a vintage pattern at that.
What is the name of the pattern?
You only have one turn in this pattern so far, the one in the first line. What method did you use to close the gap at this turn?

As a general aside, some patterns need you to separate sections when you turn partway through a row (which you’ll work on later - some sock patterns do stuff like that) rather than keep all the stitches together, but it depends on the pattern.

Thank you!

The pattern came from a knitting magazine from P&B wools. So I tried the wrap and turn method which was fine and it appeared to have worked, but then it was confusing because as the pattern shows, I’m supposed to work only those 37 stitches for 10 rows so I assumed I was going to need to do more turns and so I tried the wrap and turn method again and that’s when the gaps started appearing.

That makes sense, my pattern wasn’t very clear on how to go about doing that…

OK, so you only need to wrap & turn once. Proceed with the rows that are given. You can read ahead to see where the pattern is going and what you need to do next. There’ll be some way to connect the sts to the unworked sts.
Thanks for the pattern photo. Where are you in the pattern, the front, shoulders,? It’s even possible that the wrap & turn isn’t needed here.

So I’m working on the front and once I figure out this step, the next part is to shape for the shoulder. I’m just a bit confused because I currently have 87 stitches on my needle and if I’m only supposed to work 37 stitches for 10 rows, what am I to do with the rest of the stitches?
Here’s the remainder of the pattern to finish the front

You’re working the 37sts for one shoulder. The remaining sts can go on a holder or scrap yarn for later. The remaining sts will form the center neck and the second shoulder. Below the directions for the Shape Shoulder are directions for the center 11sts and then that second shoulder.

Oh I finally get it now! Thank you so much for your help, I don’t think I would have figured it out on my own!
