Turkish c.o. = figure 8?

I found a toe up sock pattern. The pattern calls for a figure 8 c.o… Is a figure 8 the same as a turkish c.o.?

No - Turkish cast on is where the yarn is wrapped around both needles at once (circles). Figure-8 is where you literally make figure 8s around both needles - the yarn crosses over itself in between the needles.
