Im a new knitter and have been trying some patterns, a couple im trying out both use picked up stitchs to join 2 sections together as you knit.
the first is called revolutionby wooly thoughts, while working this the work is supposed to be a wedge so theres no need to worry about the extra stitch as you need to increase by one stitch every other row anyway.
the other is a 10 stitch blanket i found on ravelry. it is 10 stitches wide which spirals around and around joining with a picked up stitch as you go to make a large blanket. this looks realy good in varigated yarn. but as you only every are supposed to have 10 stitches you make a ssk decrease just prior to the pickup to maintain the stitch count
on the first pattern i mentioned theres no ridge formed as the join, mine loks realy neat which im happy about as im new to picking up stitches. but my 10 step blanket sample (which i frogged) had a ridge forming at the join.
as the only diffference is the decease im guessing its this causing the ridge? am i right? if so is there a way to avoid the ridge. at first i didnt mind the ridge but now i do. also the pattern slips stitches at the start of every row, why is this?
i asked the person who did the 10 stitch blanket but im confused as to what to do next. basically its info overload for me as im still learning
“Yes, you are doing it right and yes, there is always a ridge. Another way of working the join is to slip the last st on the row, pick up and knit from the edge and then knit these two sts together. Put the tip of the left hand needle down through both sts coming out at the front, then yarn round right hand needle and pull through. On the return row you can either knit or purl the first st, they give very different effects. You could also try knitting both the last st and then the picked up one and then purling them both together on the return row. I think that might work too although I haven’t got wool and needles to hand so I can’t check. Basically, experiment and find a method you like! I hope this helps.”
edit: i found a version of the 10 stitch blanket that made the ridge look like a crochet chain, i much prefer this to a plain bump so will try it out.
thanks in advance
