Trying to personalize an afghan

I have completed a great afghan with alternating cables on an eight stitch pattern. I would like to personalize it by adding the words “High Camp Farm” I am going to knit a stockinette swatch and hope to knit the letters of the words into the swatch. Any tips on how to figure stitches. How to make it nice without looking amateurish? What is “Double Stitch?” My knit shop advisor says this is easy and produces a clean result. She could do it easily but looked too hard for me, I am " Intermediate" knitter

I thing she probably said “duplicate stitch” which doesn’t look too hard. It’s adding whatever you want after the fact…after it’s knit.

Here are some directions.

I can’t understand where to insert needle and then go up one. What I’ve tried is a mess

I’ve looked at the video but still don’t understand how I can do separate lettering. I’ve figured out that my letters should take 68 stitches with two blanks in between I come up with 92 stitches which is WAY more nore that I want for an afghan thatis only 165 stitches across. Should I just forget trying to make this personal?

Not much you can do about size really…you might be able to play around and make them slightly narrower, but it may not work or blend in with the other letters.

The only other thing I can think of doing is embroidery which doesn’t require using the stitches other than as a canvas.
