Trying to knit socks

[COLOR=“DarkOrchid”]The sweater is done… now I want to knit a pair of socks.
To that end, I bot some dpn (bamboo) and some worsted weight yarn. I got lots…:teehee:
So this afternoon, I sat down to knit. I used to knit socks many decades ago - so why not now?
The pits… I’m in the pits… cannot for the life of me get started.
I get the cast on okay… I’m following Silvers Sock Class.
I join the circle, my c.o.'s are not twisted… but… when I get to the second row (after much fiddling), I find I start the second needle with a purl stitch and that is always my downfall.
When I try to purl, having put my working yarn around the last needle to get it into position… I do the yarn over and do the stitch only to find that I now have two loops on my working needle instead of one…
What’s up with that?:eyes:
I’ve tried to do it 4 times now and always with the same result.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about move that first purl stitch from one needle over to the prior needle so each needle starts with a knit stitch and ends with a purl. A lot of people have difficulty starting a needle with a purl.

I too have finally tried socks…Only took 4 years!!! Silvers is the best to follow, go step by step, take your time… Hows about ending your row with a purl, then starting the new row with a knit? That seems to work better for me and pull that first (knit) st tight…Good Luck you can do it!!!

I think Silver explains to split your sts evenly. If you’re doing any kind of pattern (even ribbing), I always split them so that the pattern ends. So for k2p2, I make sure all my needles have sts divisible by 4. Starting on a purl is just a pain and tends to be too lose when you go to your next needle.

It works. I swear.

[COLOR=“DarkOrchid”]I have to confess that I really like the idea of starting each needle with a knit st. I’m doing the sock she said to do and am putting 14 / 12 / 14 sts on the needles. Unfortunately that leads to the lesser needle ending on a knit so the next needle is a purl.
But… I’ve worked the darned thing out and after redoing the co about 14 times, I finally got the hang of it.
It’s not going to be a pretty sock, I’m thinking, but it’s my first… I’ll just wear them around the house and get started on my next pair… LOL!

p.s. I will do as you have suggested for my next pair of socks and hopefully I will understand more by then.
