Trying to follow afghan pattern

Hey all, this is my first ? posting…not sure if this is the right way…

I have a pattern for an afghan and one part says to “slip 1 as if to KNIT, K2 tog tbl” Does that mean after I slip the stitch I put it back on the left needle then K2 tog tbl?? I’m confused as to why I would slip the stitch in the first place. Earlier in the patter it says to “slip 2 as if to PURL, K1” I understand that I put the two that I slipped back on the left then Knit together…am I right??? Thanks so much,
Andre

No, don’t move them back unless it specifically tells you to. Sometimes, you’ll move the slipped stich over the two you knit (or purled) together to knit 3 together.

So - slip 1 as if to knit, knit the next 2 together through the back loop. And - slip 2 as if to purl, knit the next stitch.

The whole thing is probably - slip 1 st, k2tog tbl, pass sl st over, right? You would be passing the slipped st over the st resulting from the k2tog, much like you pass a st over to bind off.

The other dec - slip 2, k1, probably also has psso or p2sso where you would slip the 2 sts over the one from the k1.

BTW, slipping purlwise and k tbl will result in twisted sts. Usually you slip knitwise and just k tog so the sts lie flat. But there may be a design reason for doing them twisted. What’s the pattern?

here’s the pattern for the first row…eek (for me)!!!

Cast on 129 sts.

K1 tbl * (YO, K1)twice [with yarn in back, slip 2 as if to PURL, K1, P2SSO], K2 tog, slip 1 as if to KNIT, K2 tog tbl, K3 tog, (K1, YO) twice, K1 tbl: repeat from * across: 113 sts.

I’ve done a few rows now and I Pearl all the wrong sides, but now I’m down to 95 sts. Is it best to start completely over or try starting the right way now?? I’m only 8 rows in, and I’ve started over 4 times already : D

They way I’ve been starting, I cannot end up with 113 sts left. Not sure what else to try. Thanks for all the help!

Well you should end up right… The YOs add stitches, the slip2, k1, psso, and sl 1, k2tog, psso dec 2 sts as does the k3tog and the k2tog decs one st. So you have more decs than incs in that row so you should end up with less sts.

How are you doing the (yo, k1) twice? You should just be wrapping the yarn around the needle between knit sts, so you start with 2 sts and end up with 4 there.

It may help you to put st markers between the repeats. The first one is an extra st, and you start out with 16 sts in each repeat, done 8 times across. You end up with 13 in each repeat, however that makes 104 sts. So it could be 113 is a typo? Or I’ve counted wrong… 16+1 does go into the 113 though.

it does say "across: 113 sts. I believe I’m doing the YO the right way…just bringing the yarn to the other side of the needle without working it. I’ve tried several times to do this and always end up short.

One more question. The wrong rows, I’m supposed to Pearl…that means including the YO’s from the last row…right…it just looks funny to me and I want to make sure it’s right.

I guess I will start over again! :woohoo:

Hopefully I will get it right sometime!!

Yes, always purl YOs on the WS unless you’re knitting the WS row or the pattern tells you. The 113 st after the : means that’s what you should end up with. If you come up wrong doing it again, instead of counting sts across the row, name them - K, Over, k, Over k, dec (3 sts to 1), dec (2 sts to 1), dec (3 sts to 1), k3tog dec, k, over, k, over k. Sometimes that helps you see where you made a mistake. It could be in the double decs, maybe you’re not passing the slip st over and it’s still on the needle.

Thank you so much for all your help!! What a rock star!!! I will try my best and see how it goes! :yay:
