Trouble with yo and drop yo

Hello! My pattern is giving me trouble and I’ve tried this about 4 times so now I’m stuck - any advice appreciated!

I cast on 16 stitches to test swatch “over pat stitch”, which was a multiple of 2 + 4.

Next I knitted the first row and purled the second one.

Next is K2, *K1, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. (I understand this)

Next is P2, *drop yo, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, p2. Ok, after I do the P2, the very next stitch looks like a regular stitch, and not a yo. Do I slip this “stitch” plus the yo behind it? After 4 times I know something is wrong but I’m not sure where. I end up with too few stitches on my needle. Thank you!

Welcome to KH!
The last stitches are a K2 preceded by a yo. So when you start the next row you should be able to P2 then come to a yo.
How are you working the yo? It’s done by bringing the yarn strand to the front between the needles then over the right needle to the back. That’s it. There’s no other stitch involved.

Hi, thanks for your response. For the YO, I’m bringing the yarn between the needles to the front of the work, then I knit the next stitch by using that piece of yarn. So, at the end of row 3, I have done a yo, knit the next stitch, and then K2 at the end, so when purling, I P2, but the next stitch is one that I knitted, it’s not a yo… does that make any sense? Thank you.

Yes, I understand that you are seeing 3 purl sts at the beginning of row 2 but there are only P2 in your pattern. You shouldn’t knit the stitch after the yo as part of the yo.
K2, *K1, yo; rep from * repeat 12 times, to last 2 sts, K2.

K2, then k1 yo and go on to the next repeat of k1, yo. Don’t knit a stitch after the yarn as a part of the yo. That’s incorrect.
For 16sts cast on, the sts on the needle should look like k2, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1,yo, k1,yo, k1,yo,k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k2. There’ll be 12 yarn overs. Is that what you have?

There should not be 2sts between yarn overs, only one stitch between yarn overs.

Aha! The light dawns…thank you very much for working through this with me! I can now move forward. Many thanks to you!
