Trouble with pattern

1st Row. K1, yfwd, * k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd,
4th and 5th st over the 1st st, yfwd, rep
Could somebody please explain

What is the name of your pattern?
This is likely a way of decreasing 4sts. Knit 5sts onto the right hand needle as usual. Now lift the 2nd stitch from the tip of the right needle over the first and off the needle. Lift the 3rd stitch over the first and off the needle. Do the same with the 4th and 5th sts. You’ll be left with only that first stitch on the right hand needle and 4 sts decreased.

If your pattern is very thorough, it’s possible that your pattern tells you how to work these decreases maybe at the beginning or at the end of the pattern.

The pattern is snuggly baby crofter dk I’ve sussed the 1st row after I’d asked for an explanation 2nd Row. P1, * (p1, yon, k1tbl) in next st,
p1, rep from * to end.
45 [53:57:61:69:73] sts.is causing a problem I never have enough stitches

How many sts do you have to start the row and which size are you making, the first, second, third, etc?
The repeat (p1, yon, k1tbl) is all worked into one stitch. It’s an increase of 2sts.

This isn’t exactly your directions but the idea of working into a single stitch is similar.

Thanks for answering I wasn’t putting yon properly for a purl stitch , I will give it another go and see what happens😉

I’m just reading this one for curiosity. So this would be accomplished using DPNs? By removing stitches at the ‘other’ end of the right needle?

You can work this (either the decrease of 4sts or the increase of 2sts) with any project needles or technique, dpns, circs, magic loop, straight needles.
You’re either lifting sts just knit over and off the stitch at the right needle tip (the decrease) or working 3sts into a single stitch (the increase) on the left needle.

I’m making the 4th size after 1st row I have 28 stitches left but when I do the 2nd row I’m still coming up at least 3 stitches short🤔helppppppp

How many sts do you have before the first row?

If you started the row with 80sts, there are 13 repeats of the (k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th sts over the first, yfwd) repeat. That adds up to (1+1) x13 or 26sts. Add in the k1, yfwd (2sts) and you get 28sts.

Row 1: K1, yfwd, * k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th st over the 1st st, yfwd, rep

How are you working the yfwd (the yarn overs)? Remember that a yarn over doesn’t use up a stitch. It’s just yarn over the right needle to the back between knit sts.

I cast on 72 stitches then up with 28 stitches perhaps 1st row is wrong then ?

Does the pattern have a name or number? Snuggly baby crofter dk is the name of the yarn but not the pattern itself.

OK, there is a problem with the first row.
1st Row. K1, yfwd, (k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th st over the 1st st, yfwd) rep
Do I have the repeat written correctly? Your first post didn’t show the end of the repeat.

Before you start the row and before you work any yarn overs, there is 1stitch outside the repeat and a multiple of 5 within the repeat.
1st Row. K1, (k5) rep
That could work with a cast on of 71sts but not 72.

The pattern is sidar 1317

Thank you. We had a question about the same pattern a couple of years ago.
Row 1 is
1st Row. K1, yfwd, (k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th st over the 1st st, yfwd) rep, k1.
That’ll work with 72sts.

There are 14 repeats of the sts in parentheses. That means that when you finish row 1 you will decrease 14x4sts = 56sts. At the same time the yarn overs in the repeat will increase 14sts and the single yarn outside the repeat adds one more for an increase of 15sts. In total you will decrease 15-56= -41sts. You should end row 1 with 72-41sts = 31sts. There’s the 3 sts you are missing.

It may be that you are intermittently leaving out a yarn over. One thing you can do is use stitch markers to mark off the 5.stitch repeats before you work the row. It’ll take 14 markers but you can also use yarn loops made from scrap yarn if you don’t have enough markers. When you finish the row there will be 2sts in each repeat. The 3sts outside the repeat give a total of 31sts.

I will give it another try for about 10th time if no success I will try something less demanding then as I improve try again thankyou

The markers will really help keep you on track. I use them as often as I can. You can do this.

The markers really helped with 1st row but now 16 stitches short on 2nd row😥

After row 1 you should have 31 sts.
Row 2 starts with 31sts so that makes sense. There is a repeat of 2sts x 15 so you might want to mark off the repeats before you work the row. It’ll be a lot of stitch markers but it helps.

Row. P1, * (p1, yon, k1tbl) in next st, p1, rep from * to end. (61 sts)

Each repeat will use up 2sts and leave you with 4sts. The p1, yon, k1tbl will be 3sts plus the p1 is 4sts when you work each repeat. That’s 4sts x 15 =60sts. Adding in the initail P1 which is outside the repeat gives you 61sts.

You can check this because each repeat increases 2sts. Times 15repeats that’s 30sts increased. 31 + 30 = 61sts.

Are you working the yarn over (yon) without using up a stitch, just bringing the yarn over the needle to the back?

Think I will try something new and come back to this at a later date no matter what I do I never have enough stitches :sob:

This is so painful and knitting should be fun for you. Take good notes of where you are and put this one into time out. Once you get back to it, the rows after row 2 have no increases or decreases at least until you finish the lace border. It’ll be easer when you can pick it up fresh.
