TROUBLE with feather and fan knitted stitch

I really hope someone can help me! I am starting a feather and fan wrap for a Christmas present, but for some reason I am not able to get it right. I have worked it over and over to try to get it right all day . The pattern calls to
co 76 sts
1st row k
2nd row k2, p, ending with k2
3rd row k2, k2tog (3x’s), yo k1 (6x’s) repeat ending k2
4th row k
Ok how simple is that! For some reson I end up with like 90 something sts instead of the 76 sts. So, I got a different ball of yarn co 22 sts and did the pattern perfect for 6". Please ,tell me what I am doing wrong I am so frustrated how can I do it on the small swatch and not the large one? I can not for the life of me figure it out!

Thank You!

If you put a stitch marker at every 18 stitches you should see the area where your mistakes are. When I was making my daughter-in-laws afghan that was how I did it and I had over 100 stitches for the afghan using cotton yarn(they lived in Key West FL when I made it). I used a seed stitch border before the pattern rows and put my stitch markers one every 18 stitches and that helped me to keep my pattern straight. So try that and pay attention to the number of stitches in each pattern repeat.

The reason it worked on the 22 sts is that it was only one repeat. The repeated part begins after the first k2 and goes more like this:
"k2tog (3x’s), yo k1 (6x’s), k2tog (3xs)"
You do 3 k2tog at the very beginning and end of the rows, but theres 6 in the middle. Try that and it’ll work.

Suzeeq, you are a math super star !!! I am always amazed at how you can figure out pattern repeats !!!

No math, I’m real familiar with this pattern; it’s a very common one with a few variations as to stitch numbers. Many people often just do the k2togs and YO k1s, then start over with the k2togs but forget or overlook that you have k2tog 6 times in the middle.

Thank You I did wonder if the math was off I will try it!

I definitely can sympathize here. Just got back to a feather and fan afghan after some other projects to find that I have 41 more stitches than I should have. Looks like I will have to do some major ripping here which is really aggravating as I was ready to start ball 8 of 12. I thought I was being careful but something happened somewhere! I had no problem with this pattern on smaller projects like two little scarves.
