Trouble with Bumble bee sweater

:frowning:

Hello my name is Susan. I’m having trouble with the Bumble bee sweater that I am knitting for my granddaughter. I found this pattern on this site. I just finished doing the arm hole. The pattern is as follows.

Shape armholes
With RS (right side of work) facing you:
Rows 1 and 2: BO (bind off) 4 (4) stitches. Purl the remainder of the row.
Row 3: BO 3 (3) stitches. K2, P1 the rest of the row.
Row 4: BO 3 (3) stitches. Purl the rest of the row.
Row 5: purl row, decreasing 1 (1) stitch at each end of row. (2 stitches decreased total.)
Row 6: purl
Row 7: knit
There will remain 41 (47) stitches.
Begin Butterfly stitch; adjust by Knitting or Purling 3 (1) extra stitch(es) at the beginning and end of each row, to center this pattern in the garment. Continue until armholes measure 5½” (6¾”)

Butterfly Stitch:
Instructions given for multiple of 10 stitches plus 5 (I.e. 15, 25, 35 stitches). You will have to add or decrease some knit (or purl) stitches from the beginning and end of the knit (or purl) rows, in order for the butterflies to be centered where you want them to be in the garment. I’ve given instructions, when appropriate, on how many stitches to adjust.
Rows 1 and 3: K5, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SKP, K5
Rows 2 and 4: P7, sl 1 P-wise, P2 P5
Rows 5 and 11: knit
Rows 6 and 12: purl
Rows 7 and 9: K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SKP, K5, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, SKP
Rows 8 and 10: P2, sl 1 P-wise, P7, P2, sl 1 P-wise, P2

I finished the armhole with row 7 knit, but the butterfly stitch row 1 begins with a knit row. I tried this but I get a purl row on the right side of my work. Is this a mistake in the pattern? Not quite sure I understand the multiple of 10 stitches either.

I’m sorry for baking this so long, but this is the only way I could explain it.
Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks so much

Susan

This is a mistake in the pattern. Just purl another row and start the butterfly stitch, or take out the knit row and begin the butterfly stitch.

The multiple thing means that in order for the butterfly stitch to come out correctly, you need to have a multiple of 10 stitches, plus 5–so you could do this on 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, etc.

You might have to take two stitches off the first row to get it to 45. She says she tells you when to do this, but I don’t see where. You’ll have to play with it, I guess.

I knitted this sweater some months ago and came across the same problem. I posted the same question on the forum. Here’s my answer… hope it helps!

DO NOT OMIT THE KNIT ROW (Row 7). Just add an extra purl row before beginning the Butterfly Stitch pattern like Ingrid said. If you don’t, the butterfly stitch will be too close to the horizontal band that you just created for Rows 1-5.

For future reference on the butterfly stitch, I was able to fit the following numbers of butterflies across on the back of the sweater: 3, 4, 3, 4, 3. This last set of butterflies could have been just stockinette stitch – it’s up to you. On the front side, I was able to fit 4 butterflies each side of the cardigan: 1, 2, 1 (like a plus sign). Oh yeah – mine was a Size 2. If you’re doing a different size, disregard this paragraph!

Good luck!
