Why can’t I make my stitch count come out right after row 4 of Arrowhead lace? I can’t figure out where my mistake is.
It just looks like there’s a mistake in the pattern, but after seeing it the same in various places, I have to be misunderstanding.
10sts + 1 (I’m doing 2 repeats, 21sts)
Row 4 says K2 *yo, ssk, yo, sl 2 knitwise–k1–p2sso, yo, k2 tog, yo, k3, rep from *, end last repeat k2
Why do I think this leaves 12 sts, not 11? (or 22 in my panel instead of 21)?

K2 *yo, ssk, yo, sl 2 knitwise–k1–p2sso, yo, k2 tog, yo, k3, rep from *, end last repeat k2
k2 = 2
yo, ssk, yo = 3
sl2, k, p2sso = 1
yo, k2tog, yo = 3
k3 = 3
this equals 12 stitches for the first set.
When you do the second set of stitches, you’re starting from the first yo, so you’d have 7 with a remainder of 2 for the final two knits. That’s 9, so that would give you 12 + 9 for 21.
Your stitches for each ‘section’ of the pattern would count as:
2, 7, 3, 7, 2 = 21
If you did another repeat it would be
2, 7, 3, 7, 3, 7, 2 = 31

It makes a lot of sense, thanks! So now I will look again at my knitting and try to see where I went wrong. It just doesn’t look anything like the pictures! Oh, could that be because this is a lace pattern and I’m using regular acrylic? Hmmm…
The ‘slip 2, k1, psso’ uses 3 sts but leaves 1. The other decs also balance out with the YOs. The actual sts that are repeated - yo, ssk, yo, sl 2 knitwise–k1–p2sso, yo, k2 tog, yo, k3 - are a multiple of 10, so you need 20 plus the 4 edge sts to work it. 24 not 21 or 22.
Uh-oh. Now I’m confused. Rows 1 and 3 are purled. Row 2 is K1 *(yo, ssk) twice, k1, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1; rep from * This works out fine to 11 (21) sts. But how do I work that in with Row 4?
Have you ever knit this pattern? I do seem to end up needing 22 sts after Row 4, but Ingrid’s explanation was starting to make sense…
If you count the sts between the *s, it uses 10 sts and ends with 10 sts. It may be in the other row the k2 at the end and beginning are the edges. What’s the pattern? If you can link to it we can help you sort out the contradictions.

Okay, here’s the source of your confusion I think…
R 4 says “Repeat from * across, on last repeat end [I]knit 2[/I].” The repeat ends with k3, but the last time across, you only k2 instead. So that should help. You would do 21 sts for 2 repeats.
