Trouble Reading Sleeve Pattern for Baby Bolero

Debbie Bliss Baby Bolero Pattern (sleeves) reads:

Begin with a k row, work in st st and inc one st and each end of the next (3rd:3rd:5th) and every foll 4th row until there are 50
(54:60:66) stitches. Am I interpreting the directions correctly:

K row 1
P row 2
K inc row 3 inc
P inc row 4 inc
K row 1
P row 2
K inc row 3 inc
P inc row 4 inc
etc. until there are 50 stitches

Thanks for any help/clarification one can give me!

:muah:

What sz are you making? Something is not correct. If you worked 3rd row inc, you need either 54 or 60 ending sts. If you need 50, that is smallest sz and first inc done on NEXT row.

If you are doing 2nd sz, incs would look like this but you’d end with 54.

K
P
K (incs both end…this is 3rd row)
P
K
P
K (incs…this is 4th row)
P
K
P
K (incs)

continue ev 4th row. (This is edited version of my previous post.)

If you’re doing the smallest sz (net 50), you’d do:

K
P (incs…this is the NEXT row)
K
P
K
P (incs…this is the 4th row)

repeat the last 4 rows.

This puts the incs on the WS (purl).

ETA: if you want to consider your first K row as the ‘next’ row then your subsequent incs (ev foll 4th row) would land on RS rows. Not sure if working incs RS vs WS makes a diff in the patt. (Or what kind of inc you’re opting to do.)

Yes, I am making the smallest size (net 50 stitches). Previously in this pattern I have increased and decreased on a P row. I will be knitting a border that goes around the back (collar) and the sides and bottom edges. In this event, will it make a difference if I do a RS or WS increase?

Thanks so much for your help! I’ve accessed this website and the videos several times throughout this project. I’d like to invest in a good Knitting reference book…any suggestions (clear pictures are KEY)?

I’d keep your incs/decs consistent. Whatever gives you the best results. Most incs/decs have ‘opposites’ so when worked in pairs, or on RS vs WS, you have the same lean/slant and appearance.

I assume you’re working your incs/decs 1-2 sts in from the sel so those won’t affect your pick up for the knitted border. If not, picking up for the border might be made a bit more difficult due to how inc/dec sts sometimes lay.

My suggestion is go to a bookstore or lib and look thru the various ref books. (Avoid buying based solely on a recommendation unless you have money to burn.) There are several good ones but all are a bit different. What appeals to one might not be right for someone else. And the info contained within varies. Pick one that ‘speaks’ to you and provides the info you’re looking for. Pics are nice but only if the corresponding instructions make sense. (Not all images are self-explanatory.) Some have few, if any, pics but make for a great resource of ‘how to’ and answering common questions (like Radcliffe’s ‘Knitting Answer Book’).
