I’m knitting the Simple Wrapover pattern from Debbie Bliss’s Alpaca Silk Two. I’ve just started and have been unsure from the beginning that I am following the pattern correctly. First of all, when the pattern says “Left Front” - does that mean left front as I look at the finished sweater, or left front as I’m wearing the finished sweater?
I also have a more specific problem, I’m at the point under “shape armhole” on the “left front” where the directions say to “cont to dec at neck edge on every foll 4th row until 20 sts rem”. The next instruction reads: “cont straight until front measures 20 1/2 inches” - but I have already surpassed 20 1/2 inches from the cast on edge - what am I misunderstanding? I’ve checked her web site - and there do not appear to be any corrections for this pattern - anyone out there have this problem?
I love her patterns, but I always seem to have trouble reading them.
The left front of the sweater is the left as you wear it. That’s the easy part.
I have rarely had to continue working for long after the decreases were done. It’s possible that your row gauge was off and this is a place where that might matter since you have to work a certain number of rows to work all the decreases. If you’ve done all the decreases, and are at the finished length, then you don’t have to continue any further.
Ingrid, thanks for your help - but your answer creates more problems for me than it solves. I was affraid that you were right, and that left front is left as you wear it - but in my case, the armhole edge is on the wrong side - so let me guess, I have to start over??? Or give up - I mean I’ve read the pattern, and I can’t figure out how I ended up in this perdicament!
Well, thanks again - any and all suggestions for what next are greatly appreciated!
So if you wore it on the right side it would be inside-out, right?
Unless it’s garter where it looks the same on both sides, I’m afraid you’ll have to rip down to where you did the armhole decreases and start over from there.
For the left front of a sweater, the armhole decreases would be at the beginning of the row as the right side faces you.
No, the way I had knit it - the stockinette side would be the “right” side - but the armhole was still on the right (as opposed to left). I misunderstood an earlier reference in the pattern to the front edge vs. the side edge. I interpreted “front edge” to mean the be the edge at the beginning of the “right” side - but really, for the “left front” the "front edge is at the end of a right side row, not the beginning - does that make sense???
Long story short - I’m starting over - so I guess I won’t have this project done in time for Christmas - good thing I have a back up on needles!
Thank you for clarifying - I think it will all make more sense when I start over!
The front edge refers to the edge that you’d button. The side edge is the armhole edge. If you’re binding off at the armhole for the left part of the sweater and you do it on a knit row, then it would be at the right edge of the piece, beginning of the row.
It can get confusing, but if you hold it up to yourself, things get a little clearer.
Ingrid - thanks, I’ve finally sorted it out, I think. I’ll start fresh, and hopefully it will all come together. I’ll check my row gauge while I’m at it!
Thanks for all of your advice - I’m sure I’ll be seeking more of it!
Hi I noticed you were having problems with this pattern. I am stuck a bit earlier than you. can you take a look at my post below and see if you can help? If you managed to finish the garment could you email me a picture of how the pieces look? Any help would be most gratefully accepted as I am unable to contact the publishers (the DB website has no contact information whatsoever!).
Thanks so much
Bryony
Hi all
Can anyone help me with this pattern? I’m on left front and have just done my first increase (K7 m1 work to end). However it does not say to continue decreasing at this point. If I stop decreasing then I will have a blunt edge on the front edge for the number of rows that I am increasing for. The pattern then reads “keeping side edge straight, cont to dec at frint edge on every foll 4th row until side seam measures 30…”. I feel as though I should be decreasing all the time. Can somebody please advise me how this should look as the finished garment in the photograph is not very clear.
