I just finished the Tree of Life Afghan and am working on the border. The pattern says to sew it on. Does it really mean sew like with a needle and thread ? Has anyone done something else ?

More like a darning or tapestry needle and the yarn you knit it in. Look on the Tips page under finishing and the Mattress stitch.
