Translation database (help needed)

Hi all,

I’m in the process of creating a database of knitting and crochet terms with translations to different languages.

I’m planning it in stages:

Stage 1: create a comprehensive (but not redundant) list of terms to translate

Stage 2: invite people to input their translations to different languages (starting with Spanish, and perhaps other European languages)

So for stage one, I’m asking people to help me refine my list. I want to include as many terms as possible, but at the same time not make it too long, so in phase 2 people won’t see it as an interminable chore.

Here’s what I have so far:

General terms:
blocking
stitch
front loop
back loop
increase
decrease
pattern
ribbing
skip
yarn over
slip
pom-pom

                                      Knitting:

Cast-on
Bind-off
knit
purl
knit-wise
purl-wise
garter stitch
stockinette stitch
reverse stockinette
mattress stitch
i-cord

                                      Crochet terms:

chain
single crochet
double crochet
triple crochet
slip stitch
half double crochet

Tools:
hook
needles
cable needle
double pointed needle
stitch holder
marker
darning needle

tapestry needle

row counter
stitch counter
needle tip protector
hairpin lace frame
loom
spinning wheel
circular needle
measuring tape

Yarn:
double knitting
worsted
aran
fingering
sock

Am I missing obvious ones? Do I have some that you think should be taken out?

I thought of including terms like ssk, and psso, but they are really abbreviations for terms above.

What do you think?

Maybe under knitting you could add “sides” as in Right side row, Wrong side row. At first I had no idea what that meant but after I asked a question about sides, on here, everything made sense. From that point on I could make my own stitch designs and patterns, so that definition was key to my being able to knit.

Thanks
Heather

You must define it for crochet carefully because crochet does have a right and wrong side just like knitting does. Some people don’t think crochet has right and wrong side but you will find patterns that refer to these sides and the Crochet Guild will tell you there is a right and wrong side.

Don’t forget moss/seed stitch

yarn forward/back, marker or stitch marker (as in “PM” for place marker)

Join as in join in the round

Kitchener Stitch or grafting

Bobble, but that might be one you could leave off too…

Pass and over as in psso

And I have to say that this is awesome! Will it go both ways, from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English?

K2tog, and P2tog…and through the back loop

Here’s a couple of links for English to Finnish knitting terms that I use
frequently. Might give you some further ideas of what you need to
have on your list and the translation to Finnish has already been done
if you want to include it

I’m an English speaker living in Finland and using some Finnish
patterns so these have been invaluable to me!

Found this site with lots of different languages.

Here’s an English/French dictionary of knitting terms http://tricofolk.info/lexique.pdf

But if you want to use information from other sites, I suggest you ask permission beforehand, just in case!
