Totally "perplexed" howd I do this?

:?? Hi I am doing the North Country Cotton Baby Sock http://www.valleycafe.com/knitting/sock-pattern.html …after working the “heel” with 6 sts left, I picked up 8 on the side…(thinking that will never turn out to be 11 sts) so I cont’d on and voila I have exact number of sts on each needle:chair: I understand needle 2 (12 sts) and needle 3 (11 sts) but how did I end up with 11 on needle 1? 6 plus 8 will never equal 11
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until all stitches at the ends are used up, ending with a right side row. There will be 6
stitches left.
GUSSET:
Continuing to work on the same needle, pick up and knit 8 stitches along the side of the heel (needle 1).
Using a new needle, knit across the stitches on the next 2 needles (needle 2). Using a new needle, pick up
and knit 8 stitches along the other side of the heel, and continue knitting to the center of the heel stitches (3
stitches) (needle 3). There should now be 11 stitches on needles 1 & 3, and 12 stitches on needle Thanks for clearing this one up:hug:

When you had 6 stitches left, that was 6 across the whole heel. But when you did the 2nd set of picking up 8 and then knit the first half of the heel, you worked 3 of the heel sts. That left 3 of the heel sts for needle 1. That’s why on needle 1 it’s 3 + 8, not 6 + 8.

duh!!! Got it:aww:
