Topsecret Sweater Join

These are the directions for the join:

Leaving 9 [9, 10, 10, 10] sts from each sleeve and 9 [9, 10, 10, 10] sts from each side of the body [diametrically opposed] on holders, put the sts from the sleeves and the body on the 32" size 10.5 needle, placing a marker after moving 20 [20, 20, 21, 22] sts from the first sleeve.
162 [168, 174, 182, 194] sts on needle.

I understand everything, I think, except for “placing marker after moving 10 sts from the first sleeve.” So I move 20 sleeve stitches onto the 32" needle, place a marker, and then put everything else on the needle after that? Or what?

It is confusing. Obviously, they want the marker where the round would begin, and the directions for the first round are to knit a stitch from the sleeve and the body together. This makes me think that the marker could be at any point where a body and sleeve meet. Does that make sense with what you have in front of you?

I really don’t know. I haven’t put anything on the needle yet because I don’t want to do it in the wrong order. I wonder if I just kinda stick the marker somewhere if it’ll work. :oo:

Also, the stitches I’m leaving on the holders…Where do those go? I’m not even sure how to ask that so that it makes sense…

You’ll have to have the stitches on in the same shape of the sweater–front, sleeve, back, sleeve, no matter what you do. Just place the marker wherever you’re going to start the first round, since it’s just for reference. It might become obvious when you get the stitches on, though.

The stitches on the holders become the armpits? I’m trying to figure out what order I’m taking the sleeve stitches off the holder so that they’re all in the right place.

Thanks, Ingrid.

The stitches on the holders ARE the armpits. I think, if this is like one of the boys’ sweaters I made, that you’ll feel very awkward with the stitches on the needle for the first few rows, but they’ll get easier.

If I put the stitches on the needle and then take a picture, is there any way you’d be able to tell if it looked right? I’m skeered!

I suspect when you do it, it will be obvious, and I plan to be up late. So as long as the computer doesn’t get confiscated, I’ll be able to look at it.

The front and back have more stitches than the sleeves, so you should be able to tell that way, too.

It looks like a sweater! :cheering: But I haven’t started the knitting yet because I still don’t understand where I’m putting the marker.

Oh, and before you notice, NO, I didn’t fix the bottom yet.

They’re obviously on the needles in the right order!

If you count in 20 stitches on the sleeve, were does that leave you? Since the marker is at the start of a round, I think putting it at a back body/sleeve join would make sense so the jog at the start of each round won’t show as much.

It would put me not quite in the middle of the sleeve. There are 48 stitches on the sleeve before joining, and then nine are put on the holder. I was thinking that would put the jog right on the middle of the outside of the sleeve and that didn’t make sense…but then it occured to me that that becomes the shoulder area, so that makes as much sense as anywhere else.
Thanks, Ingrid! I’m going to go for it and see how far I get before I get sleepy. :roflhard:
