Top edge curling using garter stitch and a lace edge

Hi! I’m working on a rather large Christmas stocking, knitting it flat. It is knit in stockinette so I’ve been trying different ways to avoid the curling at the top. (Knit top down). After watching some YouTubes, I tried the garter stitch. As you can see, it is curling. Then I tried the lace stitch and that seems even worse. I’ve ripped it out once and now with the lace top, I would really like not to have to take this all apart. When I seam it up, I’m hoping some of the curl problem will be solved. Any suggestions? I have to make several of these stockings. image|900x1200

Thank you! Joan

The beginning of the stocking looks lovely. You’re right that seaming is going to help with the stockinette curl. So will blocking, at least to some extent. What type of yarn are you using, wool, acrylic, a blend?
Garter stitch helps with the curl but you need several rows and even at that, stockinette will try to flip the garter edge.

I’m using a blend, Encore worsted weight. The pattern is a bit of work because it is 90 stitches across plus the reverse purl row so 180 stitches before I get to the next row. Plus lots of intarsia. With such a long band at top, everything seems to want to curl. I’ll try steaming it. I would take it all apart again if I knew that there was a stitch that could straighten this mess out. Thank you for the kind words.

OK, maybe steam a stockinette swatch to see how that goes. I like Encore because of its washability and the 25% wool content.
