Toe up sock Question for toe-up experienced knitters

Nevermind… I figured it out. lol.

:?? Ok so I’m doing this sock pattern and I’m starting the heel it says:

Row 1 of decrease: K21(23,25,27), yf, slip next stitch purlwise onto right needle. Turn work.

Row 2: Yf (wrapping the yarn around the base of the stitch that was just slipped - it should look like it has been lassoed by a noose), slip this just-wrapped stitch purlwise back onto the right hand needle, p20(22,24,26), slip the next stitch purlwise keeping the yarn in front of the work. Turn work.

Row 3: Yf (wrapping the yarn around the stitch you just slipped and returning it to the right-hand needle without knitting it), K19, yf, slip the next stitch knitwise onto the right needle. Turn work.

Continue in this manner described in rows 2 and 3, working one less stitch per row before doing the yf/wrap/turn. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE 11(12,13,14) STITCHES ON EACH NEEDLE.

Each row the number of wrapped and retained stitches (as opposed to “live” stitches) will grow by one. Eventually you will have only 8(10,10,12) “live” stitches - 4(5,5,6) on each needle. The remaining 7(7,8,8 ) stitches on each needle will each have a wrap around them. At this point the heel will look triangle with the top cut off. Along the left and right sides of the triangle will be the wrapped stitches, evenly placed.

The last row before you begin increasing again is the row in which you purl 8(10,10,12) live stitches. When that’s completed it’s time to begin increasing.

Ok, so my question is…for one, I think there’s a typo where it says “K19” on the 3rd row, because I’m knitting the bigger size, so I think this would mean “K 25”…anyway, I’ve done everything up until the end of the 2nd row of the 1st repeat.

My question is … well, there are two stitches left on the last needle, obviously from working one less stitch. Well, it says to slip the next one after knitting the appropriate amount, but my problem is that there is still one stitch on the left over needle that held the stitches beforehand. What do I do with that one? Am I supposed to slip it onto the right needle? and then what of that? Am I suppose to turn it around and wrap the yarn around both stitches and slip both stitches to the right needle?

I don’t have a close up picture of one of these socks in progress the way the pattern goes, so I don’t know how it’s supposed to look. If I had a picture, I probably wouldn’t be asking, but it confuses me here

The remaining 7(7,8,8 ) stitches on each needle will each have a wrap around them.
… Because it says “EACH”…I’m confused, because to me, this says that each stitch will be individually wrapped by the yarn. But maybe this means that as you go, more stitches will be slipped and wrapped across?

Anyone have a heads up? I REALLY wanted to finish the heel of one sock tonight, but I hate frogging, so I’d rather know beforehand than afterward and have to frog a few rows of knitting. Call me cautious shrug

PLEASE HELP! I’m anxious to knit! Is anyone up at this hour? (I know you other country folk are around someplace!)

Ah, Nevermind! I’m so glad I finally figured it out on my own  I feel silly now…

The first time you do toe up can seem a little daunting, but then once you have it it’s hard to believe how easy it is! Glad you got it worked out.

So far, I totally agree with you -once something clicks, it clicks. This is my first time even doing a sock. Next time I may try cuff down just to see.

Hi!
I’m working on the same pattern and I’m wondering the same things and I can’t figure it out by myself? Could someone please explain it???

With which part specifically are you having trouble?

Row 3: Yf (wrapping the yarn around the stitch you just slipped and returning it to the right-hand needle without knitting it), K19, yf, slip the next stitch knitwise onto the right needle. Turn work.

I’m on row 3. The first question I have is: where it says “returning it to the right-hand needle without knitting it”, does that mean I should slip the stitch knitwise?
The second question is: If I follow the instructions exactly I’m left with one stitch left on my left needle when it says “Turn work”. What should I do with that stitch?

I’m not really getting it…

It will see so easy when you get it.

Q1. Yes

Q2. The stitch that is left over stays on the left needle. Then you turn and do the purl row (what it means by turn your work…since you are not working every stitch on the row), leaving the stitch that is now on the right needle alone completely. You’ll do this several times until you have several “unworked” stitches on the right needle after each time you turn to go to the next side.

Thanks! I get that part now. But purling with so many needles hanging around was hard.

Now I’m stuck on the increases:

Row 1 of increase: K8(10,10,12), knit the next stitch through the back along with the wrapped loop around its base. (I do this by picking up the loop on the point of my right hand needle, then knitting the loop and the stitch together), yf, slip next stitch knitwise onto the right needle. Turn work.

Row 2: Yf, (wrapping the yarn around the slipped stitch so that there are now TWO wraps at its base), slip the just-wrapped stitch, p8(10,10,12), purl the next stitch along with the loop wrapped around its base, slip next stitch purlwise (keeping the yarn in the front of the work). Turn work.

Row 3: Yf (wrapping the yarn around the base of the slipped stitch), slip the just-wrapped stitch, k14, knit the next stitch through the back of the loop along with the two loops wrapped around its base, yf, slip next stitch knitwise onto right needle, k9(11,11,13), turn work.

Continue in this manner, working across the rows, knitting through the back of the loop (or purling on purl side rows) the next slipped and reserved stitch along with all loops around its base; then slipping and wrapping the stitch after it until you have “reclaimed” all of the reserved stitches and all 11(12,13,14) stitches on each needle are again “live.”

On row 1, when I should be picking up the loop, does it matter how I pick it up? I mean, I could pick it up slightly from the front and up, or I could pick it up slightly from the back and under…hard to explain…

On row 1 I k8 and on row 2 I p8, but then on row 3 it says to k14 and then later to k9? Should it be that way? And how would row 4 look then?

I’m lost again…

I think k14 is a typo…on all sock heels like this, you are just doing one more on each row…so I think it should be k9.

As for the picking up of the wrap, there are several ways to do it…mainly just experiment to see which you like best/looks best. I’d try it the way the specify first and do them all the same way. Next time you knit toe ups you could try a different kind.

I somehow had managed to pick up an extra stitch somewhere on the way. That explains why I didn’t understand the increases I think. I think I’ve got it now. I just frogged the heel and will redo it. Practise makes perfect, right?
Thanks so much for your help!

You are welcome. Don’t stress out too much though about 1 extra stitch. I would’ve just K2T together somewehre…especially since it’s the heel and won’t be seen much anyway! Let me know if you have any more trouble.
