Am knitting my first toe up, short row heel socks for a 2 1/2 year old using Sensational Knit Socks book. The pattern on p.41 says to continue knitting the instep & sole until sock reaches anklebone. The book’s sock length chart on p.14 has every measurement except the toe to ankle bone length. I do not have the child’s foot available, so can someone give me a good estimate of that measurement? His adorable little tootsies are 6" long.
Thanks!
A rule of thumb is to knit the foot about an inch or two less than the length of the finished foot.
I need the estimated length from the toe to the ankle bone to know where to start the short row heel. I’ve searched the forum and the net but couldn’t find it.
I have a daughter who’s 2 years and three months old. She got home with DH just as I was reading your post, so I ran out and measured for you. Her foot from big toe to heel is 5 and 7/8 inches, so pretty close. I’ve never made socks, so I wasn’t sure how I should measure. From her big toe in a straight line to ankle bone is 4 inches, and from her little toe to ankle is 3 inches. If you need me to measure a different way, let me know. She’s going to bed now but she’ll sleep through foot measurements if you need more!
They are usually shorter so as to make a snug fitting sock, and so they won’t droop with wear. They will stretch when he puts them on.
Thanks, Roseybee–how kind of you to measure your little one’s tootsie for me. I was guessing that 4" might be about right. My grandson is the intended recipient of these socks–I rounded off his age to 2 1/2, but he actually turned 2 yrs., 4 months last week, so he’s really close in age to your daughter. I know what you mean about them sleeping through everything. Sometimes it’s so hard to get them to sleep, but when they’re finally out, they’re OUT! Thanks again for your help!
P.S. you should try making socks sometime–lots of fun!
My daughter is potty trained but still has accidents at night, so we try to put her in pullups at bedtime but she refuses. So I let her sleep in undies until I go to bed, then I change her into a pullup and she never wakes up!
I want to knit socks, really I do. I knitted yesterday for the first time in two weeks – I was having withdrawal symptoms! We’re installing new floors in our renovated farmhouse. When I’m not working on the floors, my hands are too dry and sore to knit. More floors to put in over Memorial Day, then I’ll be able to knit again. When I’ve used up my stash and WIPs and gift ideas, then I’ll start socks (so maybe in a few years!)
Glad I could help…
