I can make socks with DPNs, and everywhere I read how much better magic loop is. I tried it tonight using Silver’s sock class, and I have to say that it’s totally confusing and there’s yarn everywhere, and I don’t see how this could possibly be easier than DPNs. What am I missing? Are there any other good links for this, or even books?
Hello! You can check the videos Amy has under advance-techniques
Also at youtube some of this. At first is a little difficult just like with dpn but you get the hang of it. I think is better to start with one sock at the time, that way you don’t have all the tangliness (sp?) of yarn. And for me, the hardest part is to start the sock toe-up with magic loop, after that is pretty simple. Top down socks are just like the regular ones with dpn.

i have to agree with starting one sock at a time. i love magic loop and it’s all i use for socks, unless for some reason i decide to use 2 circs. i have a full set of brand new bamboo dpn’s that i will probably never use again!
keep on trying! once you master it, you can do just about anything! heck, i’ve even done my wallaby from the shoulder up with magic loop .
I think trying a new technique can be difficult enough, but adding a second ball of yarn to the mix just compounds it.
One little tip if using two balls of yarn and ML. If you turn clockwise, make sure the next turn is counterclockwise so you aren’t tangling everything up in knots.
I decided to do socks the way I know, only on the magic loop, so I’m doing the top-down version but on one long circular. So far so good, but just k2p2 so far. We’ll see how the heel and gussett go! I can’t visualize how to do them so I’m just going to wait til I get there and see what happens. Thanks!
