Thumb for fingerless mitts

I’m making these [http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cabled-glovelets](fingerless mitts) and while I thought it would be fairly simple, it’s driving me absolutely bananas.

The mittens are worked from the top of the hand down. I’m at the part where I have to cast on extra stitches for the thumb. The pattern says:

“K1 and cast on 6 st for the thumb, join and K1. Place marker.”

How do I cast on stitches in the middle of the row? And how do I join the yarn after?

Your best bet is to use a knitted or cable cast-on (check the videos) and to ‘join’ the yarn, you’ll just knit the next stitch.

You’re not joining the yarn, you’re joining the sts. I’d use the knit CO - move the R needle to the L hand and cast on, then switch it back to the R hand and join by working the next stitch.

Thanks for the lightning-fast reply!

Thanks–that’s exactly what I ended up doing. The thumb is starting to look thumb-like
