Threading a Lifeline when off the needles?

I have an afghan panel that I need to cut in half. Ingrid had suggested doing a lifeline on each side of where I want to cut. BIG problem is I have no idea how to run a lifeline in a project that isn’t on the needles.

I have a good size practice piece, but I’m having a bear of a time figuring out how to thread a lifeline through it. I’m not even sure if I’m putting it in the right loop. I can almost see it when I have 7Ks or 7Ps in a row, but forget it when the pattern switches from K1 to P1 and back to K again… I’m totally lost! Any hints or suggestions?

Amy is using a piece of ribbed knitting to demonstrate. Instead of reinserting a needle, you are wanting to insert a lifeline, but it is the same principal. And since with ribbing it is switching between knits and purls, you should be able to get some tips.

Use your tapestry needle and the link above and it will help.

If all else fails, you can get it cut and start to frog, and pull a row out one stitch at a time and put your needle in the stitch that pops out.

Either way, don’t worry about the direction they get on your needle. Just get them on and worry about whether they’re twisted later.
