I’m knitting the ‘general sock’ pattern from Yarn Harlot’s book “Knitting Rules”, and using the needles she suggested, and any sock yarn (I mean: sock yarn is sock yarn, yes?)
but on 2.5 mm needles, it is looking very very small. See?
However, I CAN fit it onto my wrist, so it should fit my ankle, right?..
or maybe those ribs are stretching too wide?..what do you think? I will need to tink before I get too far if it’s not right…
Ok, good idea! will do…it seems to me that I usually cast on more than the 64 stitches I cast on for these, using this same yarn, but maybe larger needles. I had made 4 pairs of Silver’s socks a few years ago. I didn’t keep the instructions though, darn it.
I believe for that weight yarn Silver’s sock class used the same cast on. 64 is pretty average, but it depends on your size. If you have bigger legs/ankles you might need to cast on more. If you’re using a k2p2 then you’d adjust in a multiple of 4…so bigger would be 68 or 72, etc. http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm
ETA: I wouldn’t go up a needle size, I’d cast on more if you need to. A tighter knit fabric is more durable.
I just noticed that one of my four needles was smaller - a size 2-1/4 instead of 2-1/2. Darn it!
These socks are going to be a gift for my s-i-l who lives in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, where the daily temps are in the minuses, always. I need to finish them up before winter is over. Giddyup!
I make wool/angora blend socks and when I make the cuff part generously large, they always sell out immediately. People now days work out more than they used to, so larger calves are far more common than in days past. Also be sure your cast on is stretchy enough to accommodate full stretch of your ribbed part. I make most of mine on the knitting machine, doing an industrial 2x2 which is very stretchy. However on hand knit, I’d probably use Norwegian cast on, and even then knit a few rows and test it.
