This pattern is confusing

Okay, I was premature in ending my last question because I went back to read the pattern and don’t understand row #1 specifically. What does 4sts made from 1 mean.

When you k1, p1, k1, p1 in the one stitch, you will have made 4 out of one.

They want you to K1, P1, K1, P1 all in the same st. So K1, don’t slide off the needle, purl into same st, don’t slide off the needle, knit again into that same st, don’t slide off the needle, purl again into that same st, and NOW slide it off the needle.
