Has anyone knit the “Perfect Pullover” sweater out of The Learn to Knit a Sweater Book? I’m having trouble with my gauge swatch. The pattern says the gauge should be 9 stitches in 4 inches using size 11 needles, but I’m getting 11 stitches per 4 inches. I’ve gone up to size 15 needles with the same result. I just can’t believe that my gauge could be that far off. Do you think maybe the yarn suggested could be incorrect? The pattern uses Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. Thanks, Connie

How big is the swatch you are making? You need to cast on more stitches than you think in order to get an accurate gauge. I’d try for a 6" by 6" swatch.
I looked up Thick and Quick and the gauge is 9 stitches to 4 inches on a size 13 needle. So going up to a 15 isn’t that unusual. Try loosening up your knitting – you must be a tight knitter.
Thanks for the advice. Let me ask you one more question since you seem so knowledgeable about gauge. Is it possible to knit tighter on bamboo needles than steel needles? I plan to knit the sweater on Addi Turbo needles, but all I had was bamboo in size 13. I was trying to get my gauge figured out first before I invested in the Addi Turbo needles since they are rather pricey.
I find my gauge is a little looser on bamboo than metal, but other people are the opposite. It just depends on your knitting style. Are you using the Woolease T&Q? If not, that might be your problem…
Yes, I am using the Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I think I’ll just go ahead and invest in the Addi Turbo needles. Even if they aren’t the correct ones for this particular project, I’m sure I’ll use them for another project later. Thanks for the advice.
