Tension squares

Hi all. Do patterns usually include the tension square in the amount of yarn needed? Do you knit the square then unpick it or simply cast off and start the project? I’m a novis and unpicked my first tension square for a sweater vest but the wool consequently became quite loose. Please help! Thanks in advance, Stella

Patterns just state what tension you need to work to; it’s up to you what you do with the square afterwards. If you don’t need the leftover yarn used to make it, you could use the square in a patchwork blanket if you didn’t want to unravel it.
When you unravel yarn, you could make it into a skein, wash it and let it dry after squeezing (not wringing) as much water out as possible, so the yarn bounces back to its former self. Not always necessary, but it can help!
