Switching to a bigger circular needle

I’m doing a 220 stitch afghan (48 inches wide) and unfortunately only had a 32" long circular needle. Much too short! The stiitches ran from the tip of one needle to the tip of the other, and looked like one big ruffle. Today I found a 40" circ. needle, but as the yarn is so far away from the new needle, I am unsure as to how to knit onto the new 40" needle. Anyone run up against this before?

Just start knitting with the new needle and they will all go right on. It’ll feel like you are using straight needles till they are all on one again.

Make sure the stitches don’t fall off the other ends though.
