Hello! Could you tell me were i can find a great tutorial on how to knit a sweater in the round. Not a pattern, but how to design one. Don’t offer me the knitpicks video i can’t understand anything from there!!! :whoosh: :?? :???: :shrug:
Okay, there’s a tutorial for knitting a top down raglan at knitting pure and simple that may be of some help. Your best bet is looking at these books which should be available through your library.

There are lots of books, but less online tutorials for knitting a sweater. Did you search? Here’s a few more ideas…no idea if they are bottom up or top down, but generally if you’re creating your own you do what you want.

Beth Brown-Reinsel’s book[U] Knitting Ganseys [/U]is about making traditional fisherman’s ganseys in the round from the bottom up (you divide at the armholes and do front and back separately flat), with no seams. Sleeves are also knit shoulder down in the round. This book is really good for learning basic sweater construction and you can use the basic techniques you learn in it to do other types of sweaters besides ganseys. You may be able to find this book at a library. Working your way through the book is like going to a workshop. I highly recommend it.
The Elizabeth Zimmerman and Jacqueline Fee books have sweater basics from the bottom up, there’s not many design tutorials online.
It’s pretty easy to design one yourself - CO sts for both front and back and knit to the underarms. Place the underarm sts on holders, knit the sleeves in the round and place their underarm sts on holders. Then you can either work the back and front separately by working flat and shaping the armholes and shoulders, doing a shoulder seam or 3 needle BO. You would have to set in the sleeves if you do the upper body this way, or you can actually pick up sts around the armholes, short row across the cap and knit the sleeves down to the wrist. If you don’t want set in sleeves, you can decrease every other row for raglan shaping, or several decreases every couple inches for a circular yoke.

Jarod Flood (Brooklyn Tweed) also had a couple of good articles in Vogue Knitting about a year ago on how to adapt a regular pattern so that it could be knit in the round. (Fall 2009 and Holiday 2009) Hope this helps.
There is a series of youtube videos on the channel paulajward that go through each step of knitting a sweater in the round. It’s also available in e-book form on her blog, easyknittingdesign, but it’s not free.
