# Sweater Pattern

I’m a new knitter and i’m working on my first sweater. I’ve come to a point in the patter that reads:

Shape Neck: Dec Row (RS): K to 2 sts before neck, k2 tog; with second ball of yarn, SSK, k to end. Rep this dec every RS row 10(9-7-6-5) times more, then every other RS row 5(6-8-9-10) times. AT THE SAME TIME, when armholes measure 1/2(1-1 1/2-2-2 1/2)”, end on WS.

So, i’m fine with decreases and all that. I don’t understand what they mean by AT THE SAME TIME when armholes… If i follow the directions and do all the required decreases, the armholes are going to be much longer than 1/2". HELP!!

AT THE SAME TIME means you’re doing the neck shaping as you’re doing the armhole shaping.

My suspicion is that you start the neck decreases, and when the armhole reaches the length for your size, you’ll start working armhole decreases AT THE SAME TIME.

What comes next in the directions?

OH NO!! i started the neck shapping right away. this means i have to undo it all?

this is the next instruction:

Faux Pocket Detailing: Next Row (RS): K8(9-10-11-12), place marker, k15, place marker, work to neck; with second ball of yarn, work to 23(24-25-26-27) sts from end, place marker, k15, place marker, k to end. Keeping sts between markers in Garter St and remaining sts in St st and continuing to work neck decs, work 7 rows more. Drop markers and work all sts in St st from this point. When all neck decs have been completed, work even on 14(18-22-26-30) sts each side until armholes measure 9(9 1/2-10-10 1/2-11)”, end on WS. Bind off.

It looks like you should start these directions when the armhole is at the length for your size. I hope you didn’t get too far!

Well, i’ve done about half of the decreases. But i’m not really sure how to undo decreases. So… what i’m doing is making the armholes the proper size THEN starting the decreases?

What you’re doing, judging from these directions, is starting to work the neck decreases until the armhole is just the first measurement.

Then, as you continue the decreases at the neck, you’ll start the Faux Pocket Detailing and work that for 7 rows, then continue in st st until the final length of the armhole, continueing to work the neck decreases until they are completed. Then you’ll work straight until the desired length.

If you need to take out the decreases, they just pop out, like frogging or unknitting a regular stitch.

This part appears that its just decorative–the faux pocket detail–so if you wanted to, you could leave it out.

ahhhh… i see. that makes more sense. So when the arm hole measures the proper size, i start the faux pocket. Well, i’m glad i messed up because i didn’t want the faux pocket anyway. YAY!

Thanks so much for the help.

:cheering: :cheering: Phooey on faux pockets!!!
