Sweater help please

Hello. I have found a pattern for a sweater. It seemed simple enough till i got to the front. I am very confused. here is the link

http://www.freevintageknitting.com/sweater-pattern/botany2/pullover136

Here is where I am confused:

Divide for Neck - K 21 (23-25) sts, place on holder for left side, k 18, place on holder for neck, k to end; 21 (23-25) sts.

NOTE: To dec., p 2 tog. at end of p rows and k 2 tog. at beg. of k rows. Dec. 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times; every 2nd row 3 times, shaping shoulder as for left side of back when armhole is same length. Take up sts of left side.

NOTE: To dec., p 2 tog. at beg. of p rows and slip, k and pass at end of k rows.

Beg. at neck edge, finish left side to correspond to right side. Do not break yarn.

FRONT NECK RIBBING - With size 8 needles, pick up and k 16 sts on left side of neck, take up and k 18 sts, pick up and k 16 sts on right side; 50 sts.

Is this the shaping of the neck?? I don’t get how to do this. I understand how to do decreases and all but I’m not understanding what this part of the pattern is for… Is says to shape shoulder as for left side of back when armhole is same length? I don’t know how to do it. I guess what I am asking is am I supposed to follow the above portion of the pattern in sequence and if so how? Thanks:?? :wall:

Yes, you divide the front into the 2 shoulders and work on them separately. Knit across the first set of sts and place them on a holder for one shoulder; the 18 sts in the middle are for the neck, then finish the row and you’ll be working on these sts only for now.

Follw the dec instructions break it down, sentence by sentence the Note is just saying what decs to use when -
NOTE: To dec., p 2 tog. at end of p rows and k 2 tog. at beg. of k rows.

Dec. 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times and every 2nd (every other) row 3 times,

When the armhole is the same length as the back was when you started the shoulder shaping, then do the same shoulder shaping on the armhole edge, not the neck edge.

Then when you’ve finished all of that shoulder, take a new end of yarn and the holder with the sts for the other one and starting on the WS, do the neck shaping for it at the neck edge the same way, and the shoulder shaping too. When you’re done with the shoulder shaping on that one, don’t cut the yarn because you’re going to pick up sts around the neck shaping and knit the neck sts on the holder to make a neckband.
